Beyond Compliance: Shaping Ethical Corporate Governance Together
Knowledge-Sharing for Future Lawyers
Few things are more inspiring than sharing our experiences and seeing them spark new ideas in others.
I gave a lecture to law students at Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE) on ethical corporate governance: how responsible corporate governance, compliance, CSR and ESG connect; what double materiality means; and how following internal and external rules can become part of everyday practice and contribute to long-term, sustainable value creation.
It was wonderful to see the students share thoughtful insights and comments. We discussed practical examples as well as key concepts. Ethical conduct depends not only on policies and reports, but also on people’s decisions, their willingness to take responsibility, and their confidence to ask questions and speak up when something is wrong.
Sharing experience with the next generation matters because tomorrow’s professionals will soon help shape how organizations operate. What we reflect on together today can lead to better questions, more responsible decisions and more ethical workplaces tomorrow.
Perhaps this is one of the most important lessons: let’s ask not only, “Is it legal? Is it allowed?” but also, “Is it the right thing to do, and are we willing to take responsibility for it?”
Thank you to PPKE’s Department of Environmental and Competition Law for the invitation, and to the students for their interest and thoughtful contributions!
